PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This oyster study series explores texture, composition, and scale through both graphite drawing and oil painting. Together, the works document a progression from close observation and experimentation to a more confident and fully realized composition.
The work began with a small graphite sketch of a single oyster on paper (4 x 6 inches), created as an observational study to understand the oyster’s irregular form, layered surface, and subtle tonal variations. Through shading and mark-making, the drawing focused on capturing the rough organic texture and sculptural quality of the shell.
SKETCH

Building from this initial study, the series expanded into oil painting with a composition of three oysters on canvas (5 x 7 inches). This piece served as an exploration of color relationships, reflected light, and the balance between warm and cool tones within the shells.
SMALL OIL PAINTING

The final work, a large-scale oil painting of four oysters on canvas (36 x 24 inches), developed these ideas further through a more dynamic composition and increased attention to depth, movement, and surface detail. Together, the works document a progression from close observation and experimentation to a more confident and fully realized composition.
